1 – Piton de la Fournaise, a volcano that never sleeps

This active volcano is undoubtedly the most famous symbol of Reunion Island . Culminating at 2,632 meters, it attracts thousands of visitors each year. If you like adventure and lunar landscapes , a hike on its slopes will be unforgettable. But be careful, it has its own little character and likes to remind you that it is very much alive! Moreover, if you plan to go see it during your stay at Latitude 21 (which we highly recommend), don’t forget to ask us for advice. A discovery of the Piton de la Fournaise requires preparation! And for that, it is important to sleep in the best conditions the night before your hike. Between soft bedding and services designed for you, Latitude 21 has everything you need. 👉 I immediately discover the rooms of the Latitude 21 hotel

2 – Choca, plant resilience

This 2nd symbol of Reunion Island, you probably know it without knowing it. The choca, this endemic plant with a prehistoric appearance, is everywhere on the island. Its long pointed leaves and its robust appearance symbolize the wild and untamed beauty of Reunion Island. Not only decorative, the choca is also used in local cuisine for its buds, called ” palmistes “. A real Swiss army knife of nature!

3 – Rougail to discover all the Creole flavors

Rougail is a spicy mixture of tomatoes, onions, peppers and sometimes fruits that accompanies almost all Creole dishes. More than just a sauce, rougail is a true symbol of the fusion of cultures that characterizes the island. Each family has its own recipe, and believe me, it is a hit with everyone during meals! And if you want to discover the best version of this dish , head to the hotel restaurant.

4 – Sega, between traditional songs and dances

When we talk about Reunion Island, it is impossible not to mention the sega. This traditional dance , often accompanied by songs in Creole, is the vibrant heart of the Reunionese identity. Both joyful and melancholic, the sega is danced during family celebrations, on the beaches, or during festivals. Don’t leave without having sketched a few steps to the rhythm of the drums! >>> Also read: The History of Sega and its Intimate Link with Maloya

5 – The dodo, the symbolic bird of Reunion

Although extinct, the dodo remains an essential symbol of Reunion Island. This bird, which once lived in the Indian Ocean , has become a symbol of Reunion Island and Mauritius. You will see it everywhere, from local beers to souvenirs. It reminds us, with a touch of nostalgia, of the richness of Reunion Island’s biodiversity and the importance of its preservation.
